California Continues Fight Against Hate

AAPI Equity Alliance is immensely grateful to Governor Gavin Newsom and the California Assembly and State Senate for their commitment to reinvest $30 million in the Stop the Hate grant program, ensuring the safety and health of all California residents.
AAPI Equity Alliance lauds Governor Newsom, the California Asian American Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus (AAPILC), AAPILC Chair Mike Fong, AAPILC Vice-Chair Stephanie Nguyen, Assemblymembers Corey Jackson, Alex Lee and Jesse Gabriel, Speaker Robert Rivas, as well as State Senators Aisha Wahab, Christopher Cabaldo, John Laird and Senate Pro Tem Monique Limon for their leadership in securing funding for the program.
“It takes tremendous courage and determination to stand up against the rising tide of hate.” said Kiran Bhalla, Stop the Hate project director of AAPI Equity Alliance. “We are deeply grateful to the Governor, AAPILC, Assemblymember Corey Jackson and others in leadership for their tireless efforts to keep Californians safe,” said Bhalla.
“This funding comes at a critical moment in history when marginalized communities are bearing the brunt of exclusionary policies and polarizing rhetoric by the federal government.” said Manjusha P. Kulkarni, executive director of AAPI Equity Alliance. “Collaboration between government and trusted community-based organizations is critical to upholding a civil society in California,” said Kulkarni.
Everyone deserves to feel safe, belong, and be treated with respect and dignity. With this renewal in funding, Stop the Hate makes it possible for community-based organizations to continue meeting community members where they are, in the languages they speak, and with culturally-relevant services they trust.
AAPI Equity Alliance is proud to serve as the Los Angeles County Stop the Hate Regional Lead, helping to drive the impact of the 42 Stop the Hate LA grantees over the last four years. From 2022 to 2024, Stop the Hate supported nearly 2 million residents across the state in addressing and recovering from hate through a powerful network of 180 community-based organizations. In Los Angeles, 580,000 residents were supported through direct, prevention, and intervention services—a proven social safety net program that serves ALL Californians! #StoptheHate
