AAPI Equity Alliance Applauds SCOTUS Ruling
Upholding Birthright Citizenship
Today marks a victory for every American as the Supreme Court affirms our constitutional right to birthright citizenship for every child born in the United States. Established through the 14th Amendment, birthright citizenship has helped shape and strengthen American democracy for more than 150 years, and is foundational to our democracy and society.
For Asian Americans, birthright citizenship is a central part of our history. In 1898, Wong Kim Ark, a Chinese American born in the U.S., successfully challenged the government’s attempt to deny his citizenship. His landmark victory during an era of anti-Asian exclusion enshrined this constitutional right that those born on American soil are citizens, regardless of their parent’s immigration status or national origin.
Our communities have grown over the years because of inclusive policies like birthright citizenship, and that’s exactly why it’s been under threat. While AAPI Equity Alliance celebrates today’s ruling, we also recognize the attacks against our communities are far from over. We must unite, remain vigilant, and continue fighting for a future that celebrates our differences and honors our humanity.
