Just last night, a mass shooting occurred in Monterey Park resulting in the deaths of ten individuals and injuring ten others. Our hearts go out to the victims and their loved ones experiencing loss during a time of union. For this tragedy to happen so close to home, in a majority AAPI neighborhood, and on Lunar New Years Eve is truly shocking. We are devastated by the violence in our communities. Hearing news like this day in and day out is infuriating – we know that all too well, but we also know that the AAPI community is certainly not alone in facing it.
This Lunar New Year reminds us of the importance of coming together to not only celebrate, but to heal. We invite you to take this opportunity to hold your loved ones close; reaffirm in the values of love, inclusion and acceptance; and to recommit to the fight against senseless violence, hate and discrimination.
