AAPI Equity Alliance condemns the remarks by Rep. Lance Gooden (TX-05) on Fox News this Thursday questioning Rep. Judy Chu’s loyalty to the United States because she is Chinese American. Not only is this rhetoric xenophobic, fear mongering, and a type of racist profiling of Chinese Americans, but is dangerously divisive that incites hate, racism and violence.
A report by Stop AAPI Hate in October 2022 found that rhetoric by candidates and elected officials blaming China and scapegoating Asians and Asian Americans around national security, public health crises, or economic downturns is repeated by perpetrators of hate incidents towards Asians and Asian Americans.
We call on Rep. Gooden to formally apologize to Rep. Chu and to the Asian and Asian American community for this blatantly racist attack. AAPI Equity Alliance will continue to hold him and all public officials at all levels of government accountable for statements like these, because it is vital that our diverse Asian American community members live without fear that they might be attacked – verbally or physically – simply because of their ethnicity.
